Airlangga (Bali, 1000 - 1049) or often written as Erlangga, was the founder of the Kahuripan Kingdom, which ruled from 1009-1042 with the title of Sri Maharaja Rakai Halu Sri Dharmawangsa Airlangga Anantawikramatunggadewa. As a king, he ordered Mpu Kanwa to compose Kakawin Arjunawiwaha which described his success in warfare. At the end of his reign, his kingdom was split in two into the Kadiri Kingdom and the Janggala Kingdom for his two sons. The name Airlangga is still famous in various folk tales, and is often immortalized in various places in Indonesia.
The name Airlangga means "jumping water". He was born in 1000. His father was Udayana, the king of the Bedahul Kingdom from the Warmadewa dynasty. Her mother was named Mahendradatta, a daughter of Wangsa Isyana from the Medang Kingdom. At that time Medang became a strong enough kingdom, even conquering Bali, establishing a colony in West Kalimantan, and staging an attack on Sriwijaya.
Airlangga has two younger siblings, namely Marakata (became king of Bali after their father died) and Anak Wungsu (ascended to the throne after Marakata's death). In various inscriptions he issued, Airlangga acknowledged that he was a descendant of Mpu Sindok from Wangsa Isyana from the Medang Mataram kingdom in Central Java.
